This is a bit of a late post, but it’s never a bad time to discuss NYFW.
New York Fashion Week is one of the most important events in the fashion industry calendar. For stylists and designers, it’s an opportunity to see the latest collections from established and up-and-coming designers, to network with other professionals in the industry, and to gain exposure for their own work.
The week kicks off with a series of high-profile parties, which are often attended by celebrities and socialites. These parties give attendees a chance to mingle and network with each other, as well as getting a first look at new collections.
Designer showcases are another highlight of Fashion Week. Here, designers present their latest creations to an audience of buyers, journalists, and other industry insiders. These shows can be a make-or-break moment for new designers, so the pressure is always high to put on a good show.
For fashion stylists, NYFW is an opportunity to see the latest trends and learn about new designers. This helps a stylist to better serve personal shopping & editorial fashion styling clients; the more shopping and brand knowledge a fashion industry professional has, the better service he or she can provide. It’s also a great chance to meet with potential photo shoot clients and discuss their needs. With so much going on, it’s no wonder that New York Fashion Week is such a vital event for anyone in the fashion industry.
When I attended this past Summer, I made sure to hit as many parties and events as possible. I also took the time to network with other professionals, exchange business cards, and learn about new trends. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. I’m already looking forward to next season’s Fashion Week.
Some of the best showcases I saw this season were from both established and up-and-coming designers. It was actually super educational to see new collections and get a feel for where the industry is headed.
Of course, the best outfits are often outside the shows, with rich street style being shown. The most validating thing was being photographed myself, especially in my own original designs for QUIRK. It’s great to be recognized for your own personal style & designs among such a wealth of fashion talent and creatives who are masters of their craft, be it personality via their wardrobe or their collection artfully displayed on the catwalk.
Despite the fashion industry having a bit of a storied stereotyped reputation for cattiness, it’s simply not the case; one of my favorite things about being at New York Fashion Week is the sense of camaraderie among attendees. Everyone is there to support each other and have a good time. I always leave Fashion Week feeling inspired and motivated to continue doing what I love (be it as a fashion stylist, personal stylist, trend forecaster, or fashion designer).
In all, if you’re thinking of attending New York Fashion Week, Los Angeles Fashion Week, or (if you happen to live in a city other than Los Angeles or NYC) any other local fashion week event, I highly recommend it. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the industry, meet new people, and see some amazing fashion. -Just be prepared to dress up in an outfit that looks like it was put together by a stylist/image consultant (consider booking a client styling session for the occasion ;-), and pick out some comfortable shoes for your trip because you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. It is New York City, after all!
